Pennsylvania's regular firearms deer season opens Saturday, Nov. 28, 2026, and that gives you about six weeks to get your gun, optic and ammo squared away. If you hunt around Telford, Souderton, Harleysville, Quakertown or anywhere in Montgomery and Bucks County, there's an extra wrinkle: you're in a Special Regulations Area, and not every deer gun is legal here.

This guide covers the 2026–27 dates, what the Game Commission allows in our area, and a simple prep checklist. We'll link the official sources so you can confirm the details yourself.

Key 2026–27 deer and bear dates for southeastern PA

The Pennsylvania Game Commission approved the final 2026–27 hunting seasons in April. Here are the dates most local hunters ask us about:

  • Archery deer, WMUs 2B, 5C and 5D: Sept. 19–Nov. 27, and Dec. 26, 2026–Jan. 24, 2027
  • Antlerless muzzleloader (statewide): Oct. 17–25
  • Antlerless special firearms (statewide, eligible hunters only): Oct. 22–25
  • Regular firearms deer (statewide): Nov. 28–Dec. 13
  • Extended antlerless firearms, WMUs 2B, 5C and 5D: Dec. 26, 2026–Jan. 24, 2027
  • Flintlock (statewide): Dec. 26, 2026–Jan. 24, 2027
  • Regular firearms bear (statewide): Nov. 21–24, with extended bear in 5C and 5D running Nov. 28–Dec. 13

Two changes stand out this year. Sunday hunting now covers every Sunday inside a season's dates (migratory birds excepted), so the rifle season includes Nov. 29, Dec. 6 and Dec. 13. And many seasons that used to end on a Saturday now end on a Sunday. Check the PGC's WMU maps to confirm which unit your property falls in.

Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties make up the Special Regulations Area. According to the 2026–27 Hunting & Trapping Digest, deer hunters outside Philadelphia County may use:

  • Rifles and handguns: manually operated and chambered for a straight-walled centerfire cartridge
  • Muzzleloaders: .44 caliber or larger
  • Shotguns: manual or semiautomatic, .410 or larger, firing slugs
  • Bows and crossbows: crossbows need at least a 125-pound draw weight

A few things trip people up. Bottlenecked centerfire cartridges, like most classic deer rifle rounds, are not allowed here. The Digest also says buckshot can no longer be used. Philadelphia County is bows and crossbows only, and the Game Commission notes centerfire rifles remain prohibited at Tyler State Park and Ridley Creek State Park.

Straight-walled rounds such as .350 Legend and .450 Bushmaster have become popular local choices. Rules change, so read the current Digest before you buy or hunt. This post isn't legal advice.

Your pre-season gun prep checklist

1. Clean and inspect it now, not the night before. A gun that sat in the safe since last December may have old lube, light rust or a loose scope ring. Field strip it, clean the bore, and check stock screws and mounts. If something feels off, have it looked at while there's still time.

2. Confirm your zero with the ammo you'll hunt with. Slugs and straight-wall loads can shift point of impact from one brand or bullet weight to the next. Buy enough of one load to sight in and hunt the whole season. Shoot from the same rest and range you expect in the field, which around here is often 100 yards or less.

3. Check your optic. Fog, a loose turret or a dead illuminated-reticle battery can ruin opening morning. Make sure your scope or red dot holds zero after a few rounds. Cold mornings are hard on batteries, so bring a spare.

4. Plan your orange. During the regular firearms season, the Digest requires 250 square inches of fluorescent orange on your head, chest and back combined, visible from 360 degrees. Archery hunters out during the firearms season must meet that rule too. An orange hat and vest covers it.

5. Know how to report your harvest. The PGC says you can report a deer online at huntfish.pa.gov, by phone at 1-800-838-4431, or by mail with the card in the Digest. Under the new CWD rules, high-risk parts go out with commercial trash service if you move the carcass.

Frequently asked questions

When does the 2026 PA rifle deer season start? The regular firearms deer season runs Nov. 28 through Dec. 13, 2026, statewide, including the Sundays of Nov. 29, Dec. 6 and Dec. 13, per the PGC's final 2026–27 seasons.

Can I use a .30-06 or .308 for deer in Montgomery or Bucks County? No. Both are bottlenecked cartridges, and the Digest prohibits bottlenecked centerfire cartridges in Special Regulations Areas. Look at a manually operated straight-wall rifle, a slug shotgun or a muzzleloader instead.

Can I hunt deer with buckshot around Telford or Quakertown? The 2026–27 Digest says buckshot can no longer be used in the Special Regulations Area. Slugs are the shotgun option.

How early should I sight in my deer gun? Sooner is better. Giving yourself a few weeks leaves room to fix a scope, swap ammo or get gunsmithing done before Nov. 28.
